so there's been construction in my neighborhood for about 14 months now and it hasn't been fun. i partially (because it was better than blaming it on myself) blamed my miscarriage on the construction. they had this machine that just made this weird vibrating humming sound. i decided that caused it.

i walk across the street from it now just in case i was right.

anyway, they tore up 5th avenue and 4th avenue and union street. and it's honestly getting annoying. aside from our need to leave the neighborhood for money reasons, it's just been way too long to have to climb over scaffolding and through mud to get to the fucking subway.

but. there is one thing i will miss. and i'm putting this on my list of 100 things i love about NYC, i now know the construction guys. they say hello.

there's the oldest guy who i think is the foreman who mostly smokes and watches the other guys. there's these two young guys who always yell at each other. and there's the guy i call "mr. beatles".

he sings beatles songs, VERY loudly, when he sees me coming. i prefer to think it is just me but he may do it for other people too. but he isn't singing when i'm down the block, just when i arrive.

i think he does it because i caught him singing "yellow submarine" one morning and laughed. he said "glad to see you smile." and now every morning that i see him, he sings a new song.

it's a good thing he picked the beatles cause if was WHAM! he'd be all out of songs by now.

today was a great day. today, i walked up and he shouted "GOOD DAY - SUNSHINE GOOD DAY - SUNSHINE" at me. "I FOUND SOMETHING I CAN - LAUGH ABOUT. I FEEL GOOD...."

now i can't stop humming it. and you know. on a day like today - the perfect new york fall day - a crisp clear sunny bright tint of frost in the air kind of day... singing GOOD DAY SUNSHINE is not a bad thing.
